"What is your boyfriend's problem Ash?" Bret asked leaning his back up against the bar. "I mean he was really going overboard. He's lucky we didn't let him go. That big guy would of kicked his ass for sure."
"I don't know. John has a hot temper. He's very jealous, but I know he loves me." She replied and glanced back at the door. "What could be taking them so long?"
"Easy girl you've got it bad for this dude and I just don't get it. He's a hot head, he's scrawny as hell, and he is so damn full of himself."
"Stop it! He ain't scrawny!"
"But you admit he's full of himself!" He laughed.
"Maybe a little." She smiled and was caught off guard by Keith walking up to her.
"Hello beautiful, I hope you realize your boyfriend must be confused. Whatever some guy did to you, it definitely wasn't me."
"I'm sorry. He is just on edge. We couldn't see the guy's face, but he was your build and his boots were almost identical to the ones you have on."
He looked down at his boots. "Yeah a lot of people have these. Just wanted to make sure you knew it wasn't me." He smiled hoping to put her at ease.
"Okay thanks." She replied half heartedly still wondering if she really could believe this stranger.
John and Patty appeared and her heart skipped a beat. She hoped he had calmed down enough not to go after Keith again.
"Are you okay now?" She looked at him and he only glanced at her, mumbled, "yeah" and quickly turned to Keith. "If I was out of line I'm sorry, but I lose my head easily about my girlfriend."
"I totally understand. I'm just not that sort of jerk."
"Okay. I'll drop it because Patty asked me to and we go way back. But I will be watching and if I even see you look at Ash sideways, you'll have to deal with me." John looked up to face him eye to eye, to get some kind of sign he understood.
"No problem man." Keith was very agreeable and walked over to Patty.
"John turned back to Ashley. "I'm sorry baby. What did you ask me?"
"Just if you were okay."
"Yeah. I'm good."
"I really don't think it was him John."
"Okay, let's just forget about it. Come here." He pulled her in to him and wrapped his arms around her. " Have I told you how sexy you look tonight?"
"Nope not lately and I'm feeling very neglected." She faked a pout.
"Well I'm sorry. You are easily the sexiest chick here. Do you forgive me for showing my ass in here earlier? I just hate the thought of anybody trying to mess with you baby. I love you so much." He smiled up and personal right in her face and kissed the tip of her nose.
"Oh God Jon!" She protested.
"What?" He chuckled.
"You slobberd on my nose!" She wiped at her nose with one of her black gloves she was still wearing.
He laughed. "Well that's what they call a big wet one!" He chuckled. "You know you're ruining my romantic moment?"
"Really? Romantic huh?" She asked playfully.
"Yeah I know tonight hasn't gone like I really wanted it to. Let me make it up to you tomorrow night!" He seemed to get really excited about the prospect of making it up to her. "We can go out on a formal date. Some place fancy. Somewhere I can show you off a litle, but not too crowded. I want you all to myself."
"You don't have to take me anywhere John. Even with everything that happened, I had a great time, just because I was with you."
"And I appreciate you lying to my face but it has been a shit show and you know it, but tomorrow night will be special. I want to show you what you mean to me Ashley. Please let me make this up to you." He began begging with his eyes. She was no match for his baby blues.
"Okay." She smiled. "But please don't spend a lot of money! It really doesn't have to be fancy. McDonald's is fine with me."
"Damn you really have no faith in me what's so ever, if you think my fancy date could be at McDonald's." He laughed and put his arm around her. "I am going to take my beautiful baby out on a date she deserves. So stop fussing, because you ain't going to win this one." He smiled and it seemed to light his face up.
"Okay. It sounds wonderful. I love you John."
"I love you too. Let's go hunt a beer. I'm thirsty. You want some champagne?" He asked walking toward the bar.
"No I'm okay. My stomach has been feeling a little funny. I think it's something I ate." She looked at him hoping he wouldn't push her about it.
"I'm sorry baby do you want to take off? We can go home if you're not feeling good."
"Get your beer. I'm okay."
"Alright if you're sure?"
"Of course I am." She smiled at him, perching herself up on a barstool.
Stacey and Richie walked up to her. "Wow that guy, so could of kicked Johnny's ass!" Stacey lowered her voice just enough that John couldn't hear and let out a small giggle followed by a chuckle from Richie.
"Oh hush! He was trying to fight for my honor, you can't fault a man for that!" Ashley proudly defended him.
"Well your man is always trying to fight somebody! John has been thrown out of this club for fighting more thimes than I can count!" Stacey laughed.
"Really?" Ashley asked curiously. "I love him, but he's not big as a minute." She looked up a Richie. "What the heck is he thinking?"
"Oh hell, I don't know. He doesn't take anybody's shit. He might get his ass beat, but he goes down swinging." Richie chuckled.
John walked up. "What are you three talking about?" He asked and took a swig of his beer.
"Nothing just you and your affliction." Richie grinned.
"What the hell are you stammering about Little Richard?" John asked with a widening smile.
"You know all the complaints you have had about your small pecker."
John laughed. "You are so full of shit Sambora! But I ain't even worrying about your warped sense of humor tonight! Ashley knows better. Your lies won't work on her tonight!" He laughed.
Ashley had a questioning look on her face. "He's teased you before about the size of it?"
"Yeah. We went a club in the city called CGBG and we met some girls and he told them that shit!" John exclaimed and fake punched Richie on the arm. "That chick looked at me funny all night!"
Richie laughed. "Yep you didn't get any that night! Well you got something if you count the black eye Dot gave you later at the beach!" He laughed.
"What? She hit you?" Ashley asked astounded.
"No! She kicked me, but she didn't mean to. She was practicing a kick of hers for a match the next day and she didn't know I walked up behind her and she put me on my ass."
"She knocked your ass unconscious!" Richie laughed.
"She did but she made up for it later." John laughed and Ashley pulled her hand away from his.
"Oh stop!" John stood up from his barstool and tried to put his arm around her back and she pushed it away.
"No! You stop!" She looked at him a little perturbed.
"I'm joking baby! Come on! It's just a little joke!"
"No you're not! I know when your joking! I know you John, I even know what you meant!"
"You thought I meant sex! We didn't even have sex that night! She was on the rag!"
"What?" She looked confused. What the hell does that mean?"
"I thought all girls knew what that meant. She had her period." He hoped she would drop the subject, but she only got a little hotter.
"So what were you talking about then?"
"Oh nothing." He chuckled under his breath. "Come on Ash I wasn't even with you then!"
"I don't care! You meant something sexual!" She huffed at him trying to walk away.
"Maybe but I wouldn't have said a damn thing if I had known you were going to blow a gasket!" He started to loose his cool a little.
"See I knew it!" She continued. "If must have been something wonderful, if you still remember it!"
"God Ashley, it was something to me then, it was just head and she wasn't even that good at it!"
"Well you don't think I have things from my past I could tell you to make you jealous and piss you off?"
John smirked. "No not really. I was there the night you lost your virginity baby! Remember? As long as I'm the only one you've had sex with, I'm good." He laughed which only made her more angry.
"Oh really?"
"Yeah, so there's really nothing you can tell me." He looked at her with a confident smirk.
"Really? Not even that Bret was one of the best kissers I have ever had?"
John's smirk disappeared. "Better than me?" He replied with a tone that demanded an answer.
"No but he was great and he really turned me on, and you are really ticking me off!" She angrily motioned her hand through the air.
"Well good because maybe Dot wasn't so bad a giving me head!" He laughed a little under his breath.
"Oh you asshole! Well that's good because maybe!" John cut her off.
"Oh maybe Bret was a better kisser than me! Yeah you're lying I don't believe you!"
"No maybe he was better at other things than you!" She walked off and he followed and grabbed her and turned her around.
"What things?" He demanded to know.
"Nothing! Just forget it John!"
"No I can't Ashley! Tell me what Bret was so damn good at?" John looked over at Bret by the stage. "Maybe you have regrets maybe you wish he had been your first!"
"No John stop!" She pushed him away. "I only wanted to make you mad because you brought up Dorothea! You are the best at everything we have done! Nobody compares to you in any way! Is that what you want to hear?"
"Only if it's really true and you mean it."
"Oh course I mean it! I love you John. Nobody has ever made me feel the way you do."
"Really?" He looked over at her feeling really bad for making her jealous in the first place.
"Yes really."
"I'm sorry baby. I was an asshole. I just don't think sometimes. I shoot off my big mouth before I realize what I'm saying will hurt you. Please forgive me." He looked at her so sincerely she felt her heart turn to mush.
"Okay. I guess I can do that." She smiled and looked over to Stacey and Richie.
"Is your little lover's spat over?" Stacey giggled and looked at both of them.
"Yeah we're done." John answered and looked at Richie. "Let's get out of here and go get something to eat. I'm starving!"
"Okay where do you want to go? The dinner?"
"No, how about Max's." John suggested with a smirk.
"No not there! You know I don't want to go there!" Richie looked at John like he couldn't even believe he brought it up.
"Oh I love Max's! Let's go there Richie! Stacey looked at him and started begging. "Please! Please! I really want to go!"
"She doesn't even work there anymore." John whispered in Richie's ear.
"The hot dog place?" Ashley asked.
He nodded.
"Yeah it's good. You haven't been? Have you Ash?" Stacey asked knowing she would like it.
"No I've heard it's good though."
"Okay well you will love it."
"Come on Richie everybody wants to go." John stood up.
"Okay. I'll go, but I don't want to."
"What's wrong with you Richie? You don't like hot dogs? Stacey asked.
"Oh yeah he loves weiners!" John laughed. "He can't get enough!" He started snickering.
"Haha you're so funny Johnny." Richie mumbled letting it get under his skin.
They walked outside and hopped into two cars and drove toward the boardwalk.
John parked directly in front of the sign for the restaurant.
John and Ashley got out and walked over to Richie's camaro. Stacey and Ash lagged just a little behind the guys. "You okay?" Stacey asked Ashley.
"Yeah I'm good. I feel better. What are you gonna order in here?"
"The dirty dog." She replied with a grin.
"Oh Lord!" Ashley giggled. "Do they have chicken?"
"Oh no! You are not coming all the way from bum fuck Missississippi to go to Max's Famous Hot dogs and order chicken!" John quickly turned around. Just get the classic, with onion rings. You'll love it!"
"Okay Mr. Bossy, but if it's gross, you're eating it!" She smiled. "Then I'll get chicken!"
"They're all out of chicken for you! You have to be a real Jersey girl to order chicken. And they'll tell a mile away you ain't no Jersey girl!" John chuckled.
"Oh well I ain't trying to be no Jersey girl either! I'm a one hundred percent Mississippi girl!"
He laughed. "Come on!" They walked in and found a booth. A young waitress made her way to the table. "Hi Richie, hi Johnny."
"Hey Sophia." John turned to her and mustered a slight grin. Richie continued looking at his menu that was on the table in front of him and grunted a "hey." Then he looked up and shot John a very dirty look.
"Hi girls, they are both rude jackasses, I am Sophia."
"Hey. I'm Stacey and this is Ashley."
"Cool, what a you two drinking?"
"A coke." Stacey replied and Ashley chimed in. "Me too."
Sophia started to walk away. "Hey wait up!" John protested. "You didn't take my or Richie's drink order!"
She laughed. "Two draft beers! Duh! What else would it be?"
"Okay. John looked back at the menu." Relieved he had a beer coming soon.
"What's with her attitude? Stacey asked picking up on something in the air.
"I guess she's still a little miffed at Richard over here. They may or may not have went out!" John laughed.
"Not! We did not go out!" Richie corrected him quickly.
"Sure!" John laughed.
Stacey looked at Richie. "Did you go out with her?"
"No." Richie looked at John. "Why are you starting this? Tell her the truth! We didn't go out!"
"Okay no I was confused! They never actually made it out!" John started laughing really hard and Stacey and Ashley just looked at him and noticed Richie squirming in his seat.
"Just what are we missing? What is so funny John?" Ashley asked wanting in on the secret joke.
Sophia appeared. "Okay here are your two cokes and two beers for you and Johnny." And she slung a bag at Richie. "And here's you a barf bag Richie just in case you need it!" She started laughing and so did John. He was almost on the verge of hysteria.
Richie glanced up."Haha." He slung it back at her. "Get this shit out of here!"
"Okay okay. What is everybody having?" She giggled under her breath.
"I want two classics without the kraut for me and her." John motioned toward Ashley. "And two onion rings."
Richie looked at Stacey. "You go ahead."
"I want a dirty dog and an order of onion rings." Stacey put her menu down.
"And you." She looked at Richie."
"A classic with kraut and a side of rings."
"You sure you don't need this bag?" She asked with a slight grin and waved it in his face.
"Nope just the food!" He replied getting a little bit aggravated.
"Okay then. I'll put this in for all of you." She disappeared into the back of the restaurant.
John started laughing again and Richie shook his head. "You said she didn't work here anymore!"
"I may have lied!" John chuckled.
"You asshole!" Richie laughed a little under his breath and looked at Stacey knowing she wanted an explanation. "I never went out with her. I asked her out one night, but we never went out."
"Okay what happened?"
"Yes Richie enquiring minds want to know! Please do tell what happened!" John chuckled.
"Stop dumbass!" Richie mouthed off and turned to Stacey. "It was no big deal. We came in here late after drinking all night at the Fast Lane and I asked her out. She said yes but we never went out."
"Tell her why!" John laughed.
Richie closed his eyes and blew his breath starting to get a little embarrassed. "I got a little sick and couldn't go." He announced and hoped John would just let it go.
"Oh no! He skipped the best part! He got sick a puked all over her shoes!" John blurted out and began laughing hysterically.
"Aww Richie! Really?" Stacey questioned thinking maybe they were joking around.
"Yeah but, I don't even want to talk about it." He tried hard to hide his embarrassment that still showed easily.
The waitress brought out their food.
"Wow that's a huge hotdog!" Ashley grabbed for a bottle of mustard.
"Try it baby, tell me what you think."
She took a bite. "Oh it's good. I've never had one quite like this!"
"See I told you. It's better than any other of hotdog."
Stacey broke the silence. "Ashley! Check out that dudes tattoo!" She motioned toward the counter.
Ashley made a half turn in her chair. "Aww how romantic!" He had a girls name in a heart on his arm. "Now that's true love there. To permanently put someone's name on your body. That's real commitment."
"Why? So he'll be stuck with some chick's name on his arm when they break up?" Richie lowered his voice, so the guy didn't hear him.
"Yep! Or you'd end up with a bunch of names with lines drawn through them!" John laughed.
"Well if you really love someone, I think it's the most romantic thing in the world!" Ashley exclaimed whole heartedly and glanced back at it once more.
"Would you get one?" John Asked as he ate an onion ring?"
"Me? No way! I can't do needles!" Ashley giggled. And picked up her glass to finish her coke.
"Wow that is a double standard at it's finest! Let a guy permanently mark himself for a chick that wouldn't even do it for him!" John pretended to be offended. "I thought it was so romantic? What happened to all that shit?" He chuckled.
"I draw the line at romantic when it involves needles." She laughed and finished her hotdog.
"Would you get Ash's name out on you Johnny?" Stacey asked seriously and sat there looking at him waiting for an answer.
"Maybe after we have been together about twenty years! I just want to make sure it's forever! And not in a goofy heart either! I would want something more manly." He turned to Ashley. "No offense babe. That's just a big step."
"Oh none taken. I know you love me. You don't have to mark up your body to prove it." She lighly smiled, but deep down she was a little disappointed he was opposed to the idea.
They finished up all their food and paid the check. "Let's take a walk on the beach." John suggested.
They paired up into couples and walked over by the water a few feet apart to try to be a little more romantic. "You are so beautiful under this moonlight. I'm so lucky to have you."
He looked into her eyes and leaned in for a kiss.
"You're so sweet." She smiled and opened her eyes as he gently stopped the kiss and pulled back a little from her.
"Are you really sure about your feelings for me?" John asked curiously.
"You know I am! Why would you ask me that?"
"Because you said you wouldn't get a tattoo of my name it just makes me wonder if you're as serious about me as you say. That's all."
"Ha! She yelled out frantically. "You said you needed to wait twenty years to make sure we stay together, before you'd get one for me! So you wouldn't even get one yourself! So don't even try to question me John!"
"I was just joking Ash! I'd do it, I would get one right now, if you really wanted me to!" He looked at her sincerely, trying to make her believe him.
"I don't want you to! I wouldn't want you to do that. You don't have to prove anything to me and if we don't last you won't be stuck with my name on your body."
"Are you thinking of getting some ink?" Richie asked chuckling.
"No! No he's not!" Ashley answered for him.
"Hey wait! You don't think I'll really do it! I'll go right up on the boardwalk right now and get a tattoo for real!"
"You've been drinking John! You don't mean it!" She cautioned.
"I ain't drunk Ash! I'm serious! "Come on!" John started walking toward the boardwalk.
"Oh my God! Ashley exclaimed walking up behind him. "You're not really gonna get my name are you?" She questioned.
"I might just start out with one for Jersey or a guitar or something. I've been wanting to get one. Come on let's go see what they have." They walked over to the shop and went in. A big tattooed guy was finishing up a tattoo on a girls arm.
"Feel free to look around. I'm almost finished here." The guy called out as he continued the tattoo.
"Oh I love this one!" Ashley pointed to a dagger and some roses and a heart. John looked at her with disgust. "Doesn't Bret have one real similar to that? Hell no I ain't getting that one!"
"Oh yeah sorry." She mumbled and kept looking.
Richie pointed up to Mighty Mouse up on the wall. Now that's cool!" He smiled picturing it on John's arm.
"I kind of like that superman one!" John smiled and pointed up to it on the wall. "Now that would be cool. I could be the man of steel!" He chuckled.
"That's really cool John! You know how much I love superman!"
The guy walked over. "Can I help you with something."
"I think I want to get that superman tattoo on my arm. That one there." He pointed.
"Okay. It's a hundred bucks."
"Okay. Can you do it now?"
"Alright let me draw it up."
"This is going to take a little while, let's go look around Ash." Stacey mumbled a little impatiently. "You don't care if us girls go walk around do you?" Stacey looked up at Richie.
"No go ahead. I'll wait here with Johnny."
"Do you mind?" Ashley looked at John.
"No it's okay. This will be boring for you." He took his jacket off. "Put this on. I don't want you out there by yourself this time of night with that shirt on."
"Okay." He helped her put it on and she zipped it up.
"We'll check back." Ashley assured him as she exited the door with Stacey.
John started describing what he wanted to the shop owner while Richie looked around at all the art on the wall, to get some ideas for his own tattoo later.
The girls hurried into one shop after the other. Trying on sunglasses and checking out all the tourists souvenirs. "God this place reminds me so much of Biloxi. Sometimes I just miss home so much." Ashley confided as she picked up some painted shells.
"Me too. Maybe we should plan a girls trip. Just you and me! We could go home for a few days and see everybody." Stacey smiled getting excited.
"It sounds fun. I'd love to see my sister, but I can't. I just can't take that much time off right now."
"Oh poo Ash! You are absolutely no fun these days!"
"I'm sorry. I wish I could go. A little time away would nice."
"Oh my God Ash look! Alabama earrings! I've never seen any Alabama football stuff up here!" Stacey grabbed up the only two pair she saw. "Which one do you want?" She held them up to her ear in the mirror."
"You love hearts, I'll take the others." Ashley replied looking at the pretty earrings.
They stepped over to the register and paid. Ashley crammed hers in her pocket so she wouldn't have to carry them and walked to the door. "How long has it been?" Ashley asked concerned that time was getting away from her.
"I'm not sure. An hour maybe."
"Let's go check on John. I have to see this tattoo." She smiled. They walked out the door and she bumped right into a tall guy wearing a hooded sweatshirt. "Sorry." She looked up as he mumbled, "it's okay," and turned his head quickly.
Ashley felt a cold chill come over her as the hooded stranger reminded her of earlier events tonight. "Come on I want to get back to John."
"Are you okay Ash? You look pale as a ghost."
"Yeah I just got a weird feeling. That's all, it's spooky out here at night."
She glanced back at the tall guy still walking in the other direction. She started walking with Stacey back to the tattoo shop to check on John.
When she entered he was sitting in a chair, wearing Richie's shades, with a goofy grin on his face. His upper arm had a square bandage covering it.
She hurried over to him. "Oh my God! Let me see it! I have to see it John!" She pulled at a corner of the bandage. Got it loosened and pulled it completely off. Which revealed nothing. She couldn't see anything.
"Wait! Where is it? There's nothing on your arm!" She exclaimed all confused, looking around at him, then Richie, and then the tattoo guy.
"Yeah I chickened out. I backed out at the last minute I guess I'm just a wuss." He grinned and Richie laughed.
"Well it's okay. You didn't have to get one." She smiled at him and a white bandage on his back, in the mirror behind him caught her eye. "Oh my God John! Turn around!"
He laughed and spun around quickly. She pulled at the edge of the bandage hoping he wasn't playing some kind of trick on her again. She pulled it totally off to reveal up on his shoulder. His new, very real, very permanent, Ashley tattoo.
