Chapter 7: Heartbreaker

On the ride home. "What's going on Ash, why are you so quiet?"

"I'm just thinking about Bret, I guess. He looked so sad, when I talked to him.

"What is the story about him? I mean he seems so crazy about you, but you weren't together that long."

"No, but we were really close. We had an instant bond, it was like we were made for each other. We were inseparable, I hadn't ever met anybody like him. It didn't take very long and I was head over heels for him."

"Well, he is definitely gorgeous, and he really has a thing for you. So if he's single now, why don't you get back with him?"

"I have a lot of feelings for Bret. Part of me wants to get back with him. He is such a great guy, and I have missed him so much. But the other part of me has these feelings for John, that I can't explain. I feel things for him, that I've never felt before. I'm so confused."

"What about Jake? I know you loved him."

"I really did, but there was a side to him you didn't see. A dark side nobody saw, but me."

"What do you mean?"

"Nothing I want to get into right now. But I have no intentions of ever getting back with Jake."

"Okay, but this thing with Johnny, is not a good idea. You see how him and Dorothea went at it. And the next time you see them together, they will be lovey dovey like nothing ever happened. I would just hate to see you get in the middle of that mess."

"I know what you're saying, but he says he wants to break up with her."

"Then Ashley, what in the hell is he waiting for? If you sneak around on the side with him, I can promise you that is all you will ever get from him."

"I know, you're right, but he seems so sincere. God Stacey, I don't know what to do."

"Well then stay the hell away from him, before he really breaks your heart, honey. Johnny Bongiovi thinks he is God's gift to women and you can't believe a word he tells you. He's a real heartbreaker.

"But when he looks at me with those gorgeous blue eyes my heart just melts."

"When I was at the club two weeks ago, he was there without Dot and he had two busty blondes hanging all over him. At the end of the night he left with them. It really is out of sight out of mind with him."

"That's why I said, I'm not ready to date. There's too many games involved and after I caught Jake cheating, I'm just not ready to deal with it."

"What about Bret, can you trust him not to cheat?"

"It's the same thing, girls hanging all over him, every chance they get. I guess it's the being in a band thing. Girls just love muscians."

"And you have a thing for guitar players, you sure make life hard for yourself."

"I know, I'm my own worst enemy for sure."

"Well what about Richie, he is a guitar player and he is so cute.

"I like Richie, but more like a friend. But I thought you said he was as bad as John."

"He probably is, but at least he is single."

"And cute with his dark brown bedroom eyes." Ashley giggled.

"I just get a bad feeling about Johnny. I heard about him, long before I ever met him. He has a reputation for being a real dog." Stacey replied.

"Let's just forget about it for now. Will you come over tomorrow and help me get ready for the wedding."

"Sure, we will get you all prettied up."

She pulled up in front of Ashley's house and she got out and went inside. She took a shower and got ready for bed. Her phone started ringing.

"Hello."

"Ashley, hey baby it's John. Can you hear me? I'm on a speaker phone and sometimes it messes up."

"Hey John, yeah I can hear you."

"I just wanted to tell you I had a good time with you, tonight."

"Thanks, it was fun. I loved watching you on stage."

"I got such a rush, being up there tonight. Southside is a really cool guy. I look up to him. He's one of my favorite singers."

"You looked really good up there."

"Thanks. Sorry all that shit with Dot went down. She wasn't even supposed to be there until ten. She was trying to pick a fight all night. Patty, my ex, really pushed her over the edge."

"I'm sorry, I could tell how miserable you were."

"It's not your fault. She just gets in these moods sometimes. She hates Patty, she thinks I still love her and want to get back with her."

"Do you?"

"No not anymore. Patty really broke my heart and there ain't no going back."

"How long were you with her?"

"Eight months and she cheated on me with a guy that used to be in her band. I broke up with her and I never looked back."

"God John, that's awful. I know how that hurts."

"Well I moved on, I got with Dot and tried to forget about all the shit with Patty. Dot hates her, and she turns into a major bitch, when she's around."

"No offense John, but how do you put up with it? She was so mean to you tonight."

"I've been with her a while, off and on. I guess I just got used to it. But I'm ready for a change."

"That's how it was with me and Jake. I knew things weren't right. But I just kept letting it go. And it got worse. I should of listened to my heart. I knew it was over."

"That's what I need to do. Listen to my heart. Ashley, when I met you I wasn't ready to instantly feel the the way I felt about you. But it made me realize, that what I have with Dot is a lie. She's not who I want to be with anymore. When I first saw you, I told Richie look at her, I think I'm in love. But when I kissed you on the beach with the moonlight shining down, I think I lost my heart to you, right then and there."

"Oh John please don't say these things to me. My heart just isn't ready to hear it."

"But I'm telling you the truth."

"I don't know how I feel John. I have feelings for you, but I also have feelings for Bret. And there's things you don't know about me."

"So tell me, I want to know everything about you."

"Not right now. It's late, I better go get some sleep, so I'll be ready for the wedding."

"Yeah, are you excited about your big date with Richie." He laughed.

"Yes, of course. I can't wait for the handsome Mr. Sambora to pick me up."

"You know I was pissed when I found out he asked you to go with him to the wedding?"

"Really?" She giggled.

"Yeah I mean you should be my date, not his."

"Well you already have a date."

"Not the one I want though."

"Dorothea was pretty pissed at you, do you think she will even go."

"She's working in the morning. She is supposed to meet me at the church. So we'll see. If not, I guess I'll be going stag. But maybe I can wrangle you away from Richie." He chuckled.

She laughed. "I don't think so mister, you better leave my handsome date alone."

"That's the second time you called him handsome, do you really think he's cute?"

"Of course, Richie's a doll. Are you jealous of him? You sound a little bit jealous."

"Me, jealous of Richie? Nah, but I am jealous of him getting to spend time with you. Do you remember Shelly, the girl that put her hand in my lap at the bar."

"Yeah."

"She told me, that you and Richie made a cute couple."

"Really?"

"Yeah, is he your type?"

"I don't think I have a real type, but most of them are guitar players." She giggled.

"Oh so you're a groupie, well now that changes everything." He chuckled.

"Nope, I'm not a groupie, just a fan."

"Well remember, I like my fans very friendly."

"Yeah, that's what I heard. Didn't you leave the club a couple of weeks ago with two friendly blondes hanging all over you?"

"Maybe, because I do have weakness for blondes. But that was before I met the hottest one of them all."

"Maybe you should call her."

"I just did, I'm talking to her right now."

"Oh you're good. I bet you can worm your way out of anything."

"Sometimes, if I have to. If you think Richie's so cute, what do you think about me?"

"Oh you are absolutely gorgeous. But you already know that."

"I love hearing it from beautiful blondes, though."

"I bet you do. Well I guess I better go to sleep. I'll see you tomorrow, John."

"Okay baby. Good night."

"Good night."

Ashley hung up and went to bed. John picked the phone back up to call Dorothea.

"Hello."

"Dot it's Johnny. Can you talk?"

"I can but I don't know if I want to."

"All I want to know is if you're still going to the wedding with me." She hesitated and he was hoping she would say no, so he could be with Ashley.

"I don't know, maybe we need some time apart."

"So you're not coming?" He almost sounded hopeful.

"What do you have going on, because it sure sounds like you are trying to get rid of me!" Dot snapped.

"No, I just know you are mad at me and I don't want to ruin Robby's wedding fighting."

"Do you still want me to go?"

"No no no........ Is what he heard in his head but what he said was, "Yes if you still want to."

"Okay, I'll be there then."

"Damn it." He thought. "Okay see you at the church."

"Bye Johnny."

"Bye."

He hung up and went to bed.

Ashley woke up and ate breakfast. A knock at the door startled her. She got up and opened the door.

"Hey girl come on in. Do you want some eggs and toast?"

"Yeah thanks."

"So are you excited about going to the wedding?"

"I do love weddings. The beginning of the rest of your life. It's magical."

"Make sure to get a picture of you and Richie. Y'all make the cutest couple."

"So I've been told. John said some girl at the Fast Lane said so."

"Well it's true. I wonder if John still has a date?" Stacey giggled.

"I don't know, she was pissed. He doesn't know if she will show up or not."

"Well if he ends up with no date it serves him right and y'all don't do Richie dirty and leave him blowing in the wind, with no date. John can go by his dang self."

"I wouldn't do that to Richie. I said I would be his date and I will be, come hell or high water."

"Good, now let's get started on this hair."

They put all the curlers in her hair.

"Let's go over to my house I have a bunch of new makeup, I want to use on you."

"Okay, let's go."

As they walked outside John was on his porch and saw Ashley and he walked  right over to her.

"That's a great look on you Ashley. You look so hot. John laughed.

"Oh my God John, go away. I don't want you to see me like this!"

"Why not? I love you in curlers, Ash. Their really turning me on." He chuckled.

She laughed. "Oh God, I was just fixin to go to Stacey's to finish my hair and makeup. I was hoping you were still asleep!"

"Nope." He laughed. "I got up early."

"Well I'll see you later. It's gonna take me a while to get ready."

"Okay but you're beautiful, even with the curlers in your hair and no makeup on." He smiled.

"Thanks, but I sure don't believe you." She grinned looking at him.

"Come on Ashley." Stacey tried to hurry her along and get her away from John."

"See you later John."

Chapter 6: Old Flames

The Fast Lane was packed tonight. Two good bands on the same night always brought out a big crowd.

John pulled up and parked up front and sat there a few minutes waiting on Richie.

Richie pulled up and got out and walked up to John. "Hey man, you been waiting long?"

"No, I just got here." John glanced around. "Damn here comes Dot's bloodhound."

Richie looked up and laughed.

"Hey Johnny do you know when Dot's getting here?" Asked Kathy.

"She doesn't get off at work until nine, so some time after that."

"Well damn! She works all the time lately. I don't even get to see one of my best friends anymore."

"Yeah she does and I don't see her much either."

Kathy had a smirk on her face. "Richie did you hear Erica is dating the drummer from the house band at the Pony?"

"No but she's free to date anybody she wants to."

"Isn't your cousin's wedding tommorrow? I guess you're going by yourself."

"You'd be guessing wrong, I will be there with the hottest date at the church." Richie announced with a smug smile.

John got an irritated look on his face at Richie bragging about taking Ashley to the wedding. He was thinking, "It's not a real date man."

"Anybody I know?" Kathy asked.

"Nope, she just moved here."

"Good luck with that. I just love nights when there are two good bands here."

"I thought only Southside Johnny and the Jukes were playing tonight." John replied.

"No they added Scandal yesterday see it's  on the sign."

"Johnny, didn't you used to date Patty?"

John looked up at the sign a little surprised to see Scandal was going to play there.

"Yeah, I dated her."

"I thought so. Well see you guys inside."

Kathy walked up to the door.

Johnny nervously ran his hands through his hair. "Damn, if I had known Patty was going be here. I wouldn't have come."

"You don't want to miss Southside, man." Richie replied.

"No I don't but, I don't want to see Patty at all."

"Don't let it bother you, it's all in the past."

"I guess, but she hated the Fast Lane. What the hell are they playing here for?"

As they were talking, Ashley's car pulled up and Stacey and Ashley got out.

John instantly got a grin on his face.

"Hey Richie, hey John." Ashley smiled.

"Hi girls."  Richie grinned.

John walked up to Ashley and grabbed her hand and pulled her over to her car.

With a big smile on his face."Hey baby, I couldn't wait for you to get here."

Smiling back at him. "I couldn't wait to see you either."

Stacey watching them with a disturbed look on her face. "Richie, what the hell does Johnny think he is doing with Ashley?"

"I don't know, I ain't really Johnny's keeper."

"Well Ashley has been through a lot and I don't want to see her get hurt by Romeo over there. He told her he wants to break up with Dorothea has he mentioned anything about it to you?"

"Yeah all the time. I know they've been fighting a lot. She's real jealous of the chicks that hang out around the band."

Stacey laughed. "Well I guess she has every right to be jealous. Look at him right now!" She pointed over to them by Ashley's car.

Richie looked over and he was all hugged up on Ashley and she was smiling and giggling.

"He doesn't even seem to care who sees him." Stacey hissed. "I tried to talk to Ashley but I think she has fallen head over heels for him.  I love my cousin, but she has a bad track record with guys that end up  breaking her heart."

"She looks like she can handle Johnny alright." Richie chuckled.

"I just hope he's not just playing games with her."

John was leaned up next to Ashley's car holding her hand but his grin was fading.

"So I hear you are going to be Richie's date at his cousin's wedding."

"Yeah he asked me. He said his date fell through and I told him I would go."

"You know you don't have to. It's going to be a really big wedding with a lot of people you don't know there."

"I know he told me and I don't mind. Richie's a great guy I think it will be fun."

"Did Richie tell you that I'm going to be there?"

"Really?" She grinned. "No he didn't tell me."

"The invitations for this thing were sent out six months ago, so I'll be there with Dot as my date."

He could see the disappointment she was trying not to show on her face.

"Of course, she's your girlfriend." She turned and started walking toward Stacey and John grabbed her back pockets of her Levi's and turned her around.

"I'm sorry Ashley, I can see how disappointed you are."

"Don't worry about me, I'm fine John."

She walked over to Stacey and she knew something was going on.
"Are you okay Ash?"

"Absolutely, come on there's a big daiquiri in this club with my name on it." She linked arms with Stacey and headed for the door.

Richie knowing John's moods very well, knew he was in a bad one.. "What's going on?"

"I guess she's pissed at me. I had to tell her I was going to the wedding with Dot. She didn't say anything but I could tell she was disappointed."

"What are you doing here, with this girl man? You and Dot are at each others throats all the time and yet you are hanging on to her.  I know you have some sort of a thing for Ashley but, are you just trying to get a piece on the side or what?"

"I don't know. I like Ashley. I guess I was just hoping Dot would break it off with me. I mean we hardly see each other anymore. When we are together, all we do is fight. I care about Ashley, but I just need some time to figure shit out.

"You know Ashley is a damn fox man and If you don't snap her up soon, some lucky bastard will."

"Damn don't you think I know that?  You know I got a thing for blondes and Ashley is everything I thought I ever wanted.  But, I still have a lot of feelings for Dot, we've been through a lot."

"What about Patty did you forget she's around here somewhere?"

"No I remember. I just ain't worried about her."

"Okay then, let's go get a beer." Richie pointed to the door.

"Johnny!" John and Richie looked up and it was Dorothea."

"Hey Dot I thought you were working until nine."

"It was slow so Bruno let me leave early, so here I am."

John's head was spinning. Ashley already here and Dot showing up early and his ex Patty roaming around inside somewhere. He really had his hands full tonight.

Walking inside John saw the girls already at the bar drinking mixed drinks.

"So Ash what was really going on out there?"

"You know the wedding I'm going to with Richie tomorrow."

"Yeah."

"John's going too, with Dorothea."

"Ashley please don't let him jerk you around like this. You can see he has no plans to break up with her. Hell give Richie a chance he's just as handsome and at least you know he's single. Well hell look at that! He really has no shame! He was outside holding your hand a few minutes ago!"

"What?" She turned around and there was John holding hands with Dorothea and her heart dropped."

Stacey seeing  hurt in her cousin's eyes. "See I told you, how he is honey. Now forget about him before he gets a chance to really hurt you."

"I know you're right. I just don't know if I can. One look in his eyes and I just melt."

A guy with long curly brown hair stood beside the girls ordering a beer and noticed Ashley.

"Hello beautiful, where have you been hiding. I haven't seen you here before, and I would of remembered you."

"I'm not from here, I'm from Mississippi."

"Well they grow them damn fine in the south. Can I buy you another drink?"

"I guess you can."

"My name is Mark."

"I'm Ashley." Nice to meet you."

John looked up from his table with Dorothea and noticed some guy he didn't know talking to Ashley. He knew he had no right to be, but he was jealous as hell.

"I'm going to get another beer." He announced to Dot. And went and stood on the other side of this guy.

"Well Ashley that's a beautiful name for a beautiful girl."

She smiled. "Thanks."

"So do you have a boyfriend?"

Ashley hesitated for a moment. "No I don't."

John listening to this guy hit on the woman he had feelings for. "Fuck! What the hell is wrong with me? I'm going to keep fucking around until I lose her." He ordered his beer and went back to Dot's table and sat down.

Dot noticing John's face. "Is something wrong Johnny?"

"No why?"

"You looked pissed off."

"Nah I'm just tired."

He glanced back over at Ashley and she was still talking to that guy."

"Ashley can I get your number? I'd love to ask you out some time."

"Sure, you can have it." She dug in her purse for a pen and paper.

John looked on as she wrote her number down and smiled at the guy when she gave it to him.
"Fuck!" John mumbled as he was watching.

"What did you say?" Dot asked.

"Nothing I spilled some of my beer."

"Boy you are in some kind of mood tonight!" Dot snapped.

"What the hell are you talking about?"

"You haven't said shit to me but you keep looking back at the bar. Is one of your little tramps back there?"

"Hell no I told you I'm tired."

"Well you just seem different. Usually you would be pawing at me talking about us having sex and now you don't seem to even notice me."

"Well the last time I tried, you told me you didn't want to! You were tired of doing it in the car!"

"Well you are a grown damn man don't you think it's time you got a place of your own!
That's something you could do if you had a real job!"

"Drop this shit Dot! I ain't in the mood for it tonight." He snapped.

Bret got on stage. "I want to thank everybody for coming out tonight we have two good bands. Scandal and Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. The bars fully stocked so get ready to have a good night!"

"Oh you bastard, that's what your problem is you know that bitch is here! That's why you came here tonight and acted like you didn't want me here."

John started laughing. "I didn't know until I got here and Kathy mentioned it in the parking lot."

"Have you talked to Patty?"

"Hell no, I haven't seen her and I don't want to."

"I bet you still want to fuck her though!"

"Damn Dot, calm down. Why are you so jealous about her? She don't mean shit to me anymore."

"So you say now but, right before we got together you were crazy in love with her and she broke it off with you!"

"So I moved on. I don't need that bitch. I'm only here to hear Southside or I would have left when I found out she was here."

He glanced back over at Ashley, who was standing up shoving something in her back pocket and he was admiring her backside in her skin tight levis with the well worn hole below her right butt cheek.

Dot turning around to look. "What the fuck do you keep looking at back there? Is it that new red headed bartender?"

John closed his eyes and blew his breath. "I'm your boyfriend but I ain't dead! It's not a crime to notice other people Dot! I was just glancing back at the bar, damn!"

Patty started singing and John stopped in his tracks and turned to look at her. This fired up Dot even more as she watched John staring at Patty.

Before the next song Patty announced this one is for a guy I used to know. It was a song she had written for John when they were dating.

"Well how sweet, your old girlfriend is up there singing a song she wrote for you!" Dot snapped sarcastically at John.

John was turning red he was so angry at Patty singing that song. "I can't believe she's singing that shit!"

"Of course she is. She wants to make sure you hear it and run back to her!"

"Well that sure as shit ain't happening!"

"Are you sure Johnny? Are you sure you're really over her?"

"How many damn times do I have to say it? I was over Patty a long time ago! I'm going to get a drink!" John got up and went to the bar. "Hey Mike can I get a Jack and coke?"

He turned around and saw the guy walking away from Ashley. He walked up to her his unhappiness showing on his face. "Who was that?"

"He said his name was Mark."

Looking right in her eyes. "Was that your phone number you were giving him?"

"Maybe, don't you have a girlfriend to get back to?"

"Unfortunately for me I do. I'm sorry."

Taking her eyes off of him . "Don't worry about it."

"I'll call you tonight, okay."

"You don't have to, John."

"I want to. I'm sorry I've got to go now."

John was walking away from the bar when he noticed Richie at the pool tables, talking to Bret and the guy that had been talking to Ashley.

They walked away, so he went over to Richie.

"Hey man who is that guy with Bret?"

"Oh that's Mark Slaughter, he's a guitar player. I used to go to school with him. He's a cool dude."

"Oh okay. You want to shoot some pool?"

"Yeah let's do it." Richie was shooting when Patty started singing again and John looked up and she was staring right at him and their eyes met.

Richie noticing what John was looking at. "Well I guess she knows you're here."

They were finishing up their game when band took a break.

Patty walked over to the table. "Johnny."

He closed his eyes for a second at the sound of her voice and didn't want to turn around to face her, but he did.

"Patty."

"How have you been Johnny? I haven't heard from you in a long time."
John looking at her with a cold dead stare. "I've been busy."

"I heard you were in another band and that it was pretty good."

"Yeah we're good."

"Are you still with Dorothea?"

"Yes I am. She's here and it won't take her long to spot you."

Patty laughed. "I don't doubt that. You look good Johnny."

"Why are you playing here? I thought you hated the Fast Lane?"

"I hated how much time you spent here. I see nothing's changed. We were just looking for some different clubs to play. We haven't been here in a while. Not since we were together and you played with us."

Ashley was at a table with Stacey and Dalton when she noticed John talking to the singer from the band. His facial expression was showing he was pissed about something.

"What's going on over there she nodded over toward the pool tables, isn't she the singer from the band?"

Stacey looking over at John and Patty. "Oh yea that's Patty Smyth, John's old flame. He was hot and heavy for her before Dorothea."

"Really?" Ashley couldn't take her eyes off of them.
"How long was he with her? Why did they break up?"

"For a while, and I really don't know what happened. There's some old photos of them together on the band wall in the back."

Dorothea was sitting with Kathy. "Where is Johnny?" Kathy asked looking around. "Shouldn't he be spending time with you?"

"He was shooting pool with Richie. Running off with his friends is what he does."

They looked over and saw John and Patty."
Dot stood up. "Oh hell no!" She headed to the pool table as Ashley was watching.
Dorothea stormed over to the table. "What the hell are you doing here Patty?"

"Well hello to you too Dorothea."

"Don't bother with the small talk, nobody wants you here!"

"I was just catching up with Johnny here."

John laughed out loud. "No you weren't."

"Look Johnny, I thought you would of moved past all of this by now." Patty smirked.

"Oh I am way past you." He snapped.

Dot letting her temper get the best of her, started yelling. "Shouldn't you get back on stage, the quicker you finish the faster you can get the hell out of here!"

"Damn looks like John's caught in the middle of that shit storm!" Stacey laughed.

"I do need to get back on stage. Johnny I'd love to hear from you sometime, when you're free to talk." She gave Dot a dirty look.

Dot was ready to explode. "Listen bitch!" And John cut her off and held his hand up. "Hold up Dot!"

He turned to Patty. "I don't have a damn thing I want to say to you and I hope you take this club off your list, because I sure as hell don't want to see you again!"

"Still so angry Johnny? You need to get over it. My number's the same if you ever want to call me."

John standing there with hurt still in his eyes. "I don't think so!"

Patty turned and walked back to the stage.

Dot turned to John. "What the hell are you talking to her for? After all she did to you?"

"She came up to me, I wasn't looking for her."

"There they go, I told you they fight a lot." Stacey giggled.

"Oh that's not funny Stace, poor John. He's so upset. His eyes look so sad."

"Don't you believe that, he's probably upset Dot caught him talking to his old girlfriend before he got a chance to make a move on her."

Richie came over laughing and sat down beside Ashley. "I'm ducking for cover."
"Dorothea's really pissed isn't she?" Stacey giggled.

Richie laughing. "Yeah and she could kick his ass if she really wanted to, she's a black belt in karate."

"Really?" Ashley asked still watching her and John argue.

Dot pointing over toward Patty and shouting. "Well she's over there if you want to leave with her!"

"Look I have had enough of this shit for one day!" He lit a cigarette and sat at a table and threw his lighter down and picked up his drink. He glanced over and saw Richie talking with Ashley and thought, "Damn don't they look cozy, he probably has a better chance with her than I do."

Patty finished up her last song. The band packed up and she went over to Bret to thank him for letting them play.

"Thanks again Bret, we really appreciate it."

"You're welcome, you guys did a great job. I didn't know you ever had something going with Johnny."

"Yeah before Dorothea. But as you can see it didn't end well."

"Yeah I could tell." He laughed.

"Well we are out of here, see you later Bret."

"Okay."

Richie looking over at Ashley. "So Ashley, I wanted to ask you if we can take your fine ride to the wedding? I can pay for the gas."

"Yeah we can, but can you drive? I don't know the roads around here yet."

Richie smiling big at the thought of driving the Trans Am. Why of course I can drive it, I thought you would never ask and I would have to beg you."

"Okay so what time should I be ready?"

"About one, would be perfect. Can I get your phone number, so I can call you before I head over to your house."

"Yeah Richie." She dug out a pen and wrote it on the back of an old receipt. "Here you go."

"Go with me to the bathroom Ash. I'll show you the photos of John and Patty on the back wall."

"Okay."

"Here they are. He was her boyfriend and I guess he was in the band because he used to play with them here all the time before they broke up."
"Awe look how cute John was." Ashley smiled.

"Look at all these of him." Stacey pointed to some more photos of John in frames.

"Oh my God, he is freaking adorable. He is so young and so cute in these." Ashley reached up and touched one of the frames.

John was passing by going to the bathroom.
"Oh God don't look at these! I hate them! I wish they'd take this shit down!" He laughed.

"Why? You are so cute. How old were you in the youngest photo?"

"Fourteen or fifteen."

"Wow, you've been doing this a while."

"Yeah, I just hope some day it will pay off."

"I'm sure it will. Ashley smiled at him."

She turned back to look at the photos and John went on to the bathroom.

Ashley noticed a light on in the room next to the photos and saw Bret sitting on the floor.

"I'll be right back." She told Stacey.

"Just meet me back at the table."

"Okay." She walked in.

"Hey Bret are you mad at me? I didn't know if you knew I was here or not."

"Of course I knew you were here. I spotted you the moment you walked in. I figured you needed some space. I'm not mad, I can't stay mad at you."
"I'm glad, what are y'all doing in here?"

"We're getting ready to paint all the offices and we've got to get everything covered up."

"Oh okay."

John was coming out of the bathroom and heard Ashley's voice and stopped outside the door. He looked in and saw her and Bret talking.

"Ash, I've missed you and I want you to know Heather broke up with me. She just said it wasn't working out."

"Damn it!" John thought. "Bret is single now."

"I'm sorry Bret. I know that must hurt."

"A little, but not like when I lost you. I saw you talking to Mark."

"Yeah he's a nice guy. He's going to take me riding on his motorcycle."

"God you do love motorcycles. Remember when I took you riding on mine and we road to New Orleans."

"I need to get a damn motorcycle." John thought.

"One of my favorite days with you." Ashley grinned.

"That night was my favorite with you. That was the first night you stayed with me at the Royal Diberville Hotel. I ran everybody out of the room for the night and it was just me and you."

"I remember." Ashley replied.

As John was listening he thought, "fuck it, she's going to get back with that asshole."

"I so wish things would of ended differently Ashley. Baby I can't get you out of my head."

"I'm sorry Bret."

"Do you think we could have another chance?"

"Please tell him no baby!" John was screaming in his head.

"Bret I just can't right now my mind is all a jumble."

"I know it's because of Bongiovi. Don't you see, he's not going to breakup with Dorothea?"

"Fuck you Bret she don't want you." John thought with a big smirk on his face.

"It's not because of John, it's me. It's too soon from my last breakup. I'm sorry."

"Okay, I'll give you some more time, but please know that I never stopped loving you."

"You know I'll always love you too." She looked away.

"Well Fuck she still loves him!" John mumbled and walked away.

"I need to get back to Stacey." She turned and walked out.

"There you are. Well how was Bret?" Stacey asked.

"He's okay, he said his girlfriend broke up with him."

"Do you believe him?"

"Yeah I guess."

"Look Johnny you haven't wanted to be with me all night. I'm out of here have a great time watching Southside Johnny by your damn self!"

Watching Dorothea rant and rave. Stacey grinned. "There they go again."

"Yeah, I see."

"Well good get the hell out of here then!" He yelled.

John walked up to the bar.

Ashley followed him. "Are you okay John."

"Yeah, I'm okay. She just wanted to fight, so we did."

"I'm sorry you're not having a good night."

"Southside Johnny's starting to play it will get better now." He's one of my favorites, When I was a little kid I wanted to grow up to be a juke. Hell I still do." He laughed. Come watch up front with me."

"Okay." She smiled. They walked to the stage.

John was singing along and having a good time. Southside called him up on stage and he got his guitar and joined them.

Ashley danced around but she didn't know the words to the song.

Richie and Stacey walked up.

Richie turned to her. "You like this song, huh?"

"Yeah it's pretty good."

John was playing and he got to do a small guitar solo . He really put his heart in it. He was floating on cloud nine.

He jumped off the stage and walked over to them.

"I'm so proud of you John. You did a fantastic job up there." Ashley stepped forward and hugged him.

"This night really has turned around." He put his arm around Ashley.

"Stacey looked over at Ashley. "Ash we need to be going."

"Yeah, I know." She turned to John. "I"ll see you at the wedding tomorrow."

"Yeah I'll be there. Thanks for watching the show with me."

"I really enjoyed it."

"Come on Ash." Stacey demanded.

"Bye John."

"Bye Ashley."

Richie held up his hand. "See you about one tomorrow."

"I'll be ready. Bye"

They walked out the door and got in Ashley's car and drove away.

Chapter 5: The invitation

"Well I think kissing is cheating, John and you know Dorothea would too."

"Let's not talk about her. I told you we haven't been getting along lately, and to be honest she probably doesn't give a damn what I'm doing."

"If you are so miserable with her why do you stay with her?"

"I really don't know. I think I loved her at one point, but she has changed so much. When I met her she was so cool and tough and she didn't take shit off of anybody. I fell really hard for her. But now, she's so jealous and we fight so much, it just kind of ruined it."

"You should tell her how you feel. Maybe y'all can work it out."

"I've tried, Ash. Lately all she wants to talk about is tying the knot and settling down. I mean I'm young and I'm not ready for that. She has three older sisters that are all married with kids and she can't wait to be tied down and she wants to have five damn kids. I just ain't ready for all that shit yet."

"Wow that's alot of kids!" She giggled. "If that's what it is, just tell her you're not ready to get married. I'm sure she'll understand."

"It's not just that, she hates me being in the band or doing anything with my friends. She says I ignore her and I'm too busy to spend time with her. She told me to get a real job at the factory and give up my music or just do it on the weekends. I can't give it up, I love it. I want to make it big, and get out of this town one day. Not work a job I hate, and be stuck here with six mouths to feed, doing hard time."

"Oh, bless your heart. You should see the look on your face right now. Is that really how you feel about marriage, like it's prison?"

"It can be a prison if you're not ready for it, or in it with somebody you don't really love. I might get married one day, but a long time from now. I've got a lot of living to do. Now I've got to ask you something."

"Oh God, what?"

"You already avoided this question one time. Did you and Bret have sex?"

"God, why do you have to know that?"

"It has been driving me crazy, since I found out you knew him."

"Not that he didn't try about a million times last summer but, no. I never went all the way with Bret."

"What stopped you from doing it with him?"

"I guess, it just never felt right to me. He always had a lot of girls hanging around. They all wanted to be with him. From the first day I met Bret I knew he was leaving. He was only there for the summer. He begged me to be his girlfriend, but I told him no. I didn't see a future in it. I thought it would hurt less when he finally left. I was wrong, it nearly killed me. I tried to fight it, but I fell so hard for him. When he never called me I thought he was just using me while he was in town and had just moved on and forgot about me. I was devastated."

"I'm sorry he hurt you Ash, I wish I could have been there for you."

"How did we get off on such a depressing topic?" She asked with sadness in her eyes.

"Because we stopped kissing." He grinned.

Shaking her head. "Oh no, that was a one time deal!"

He laughed. "Oh, you'll kiss these lips again baby. Now that you've had the best, the rest will just be disappointing for you." He chuckled.
She laughed. You're not lacking in confidence, are you?"

"No I'm very confident and you can get ready because one day Ashley, you're going to be all mine."

"Oh really now? Do I get a say in this?"

"Only if you agree to be my girl."

Well it's getting late, so I guess I need to go home."

"Okay we can go. Give me your number, so I can call you."

She grabbed a pen and a piece of paper out of her purse and wrote her number, name, and a little heart on it. Sort of like the one he saw Bret had in his wallet.

He folded it and stuck it in the back of his wallet. He really liked this girl and planned to use it soon. They walked back to the car and drove home. He stopped in front of her house.

Smiling at her. "I guess this is good night. I would kiss you again, but I know you've sobered up too much, to let that happen.  I'm so glad I met you, Ashley. I'm going to call you tomorrow."

"I'm glad I met you too, John. Good night." She got out and walked to the door and walked inside.

He sat in front of her house smiling to himself. His mind was racing with thoughts of her, and how he had talked her into kissing him. She was a great kisser and he hoped to do it again, really soon.

He drove over to his driveway and went inside.

The next morning, John woke up to the sound of the phone in his room ringing. He reached across to answer it and knocked his guitar over.

"Damn it." He yelled and picked it up off the floor. "Hello!" He shouted into the mouthpiece as he answered.

"Johnny, hi it's me."

"Dot, what time is it?"

"Nine fifteen."

"Damn I was sleeping so good."

"Do you want me to let you go?"

"No, I'm up now."  He pushed back his curtains and opened his window and lit a cigarette staring over towards Ashley's house.

"What happened at the Fast Lane last night? Kathy was there and she said you got into a fight with Bret about something."

"It wasn't nothing, he was just running his mouth as usual. I left before he could have me thrown out."

"Who was the blonde that was hanging out with Richie?"

"A blonde?"

"Yeah she said there was a blonde that had her chest hanging out sitting with Richie."

"Oh it must have been Ashley. Do you know Stacey Covington, she lives across from me?"

"Yeah, that blonde skinny bitch. I don't like her."

John chuckled. "Well it's her cousin, she just moved here."

"And Richie is already making moves on her?He hasn't been broken up with Erica for that long."

"I wasn't paying much attention to them, so I ain't sure what he was doing."

"Well what were you doing? Were you flirting with some of those girls up there last night?"

"Damn Dot if I was, don't you think loud mouth Kathy would tell you?"

"I asked her and she said she didn't see you flirting with anybody. I'm sorry I'm hard on you sometimes. It drives me crazy when girls flirt with you, just because you're in the band.

"Don't worry about it Dot. But, I don't think it's just because I'm in a band. I think it's because I'm so sexy." He laughed.

"Well you are sexy for sure." She giggled.
"Are you working tonight?"

"Yeah until nine."

"Okay, I'll be at the Fast Lane if you want to come by when you get off."

"Okay I will. Did you miss me Johnny?"

"Don't I always?"

"How do I know? Maybe your lying."

"Just trust me, now I'm going to take a shower. I'll see you tonight."

"Okay, bye Johnny.

"Bye."

He hung up the phone and tossed a pile of dirty laundry from his floor up on his bed looking for his pants from last night to find his wallet with Ashley's number in it.
He took it out, and he was a little nervous. He mumbled, "She's probably up, but I don't want to call too early. Hell with it I'm calling her."

It rang three times and he started to hang up.

"Hello." The sweetest sounding voice answered on the other end of the line.

"Ashley?"

"Yeah."

"Hi baby it's John."

"Oh hey John. I figured you'd still be asleep."

"Nah I've been up a while. Have you been thinking about me?"

"I hate to admit it, but yes I have. Does that make you happy?"

"Ecstatic actually. You sound like an angel on the phone. I can't get that kiss out of my head."

"Thanks but, you're turning me evil. I keep thinking about the kiss too."
He chuckled. "Oh evil Ashley, now that's something I'd like to witness. So what are you doing tonight?"
"Nothing I know of, why?"

"I'm going up to the Fast Lane later. Do you want to come hang out?"

"If Stacey will go with me, I'll come up there for a little while."

"I'll be up there about six. Hope I get to see you."

"Let me get off of here so I can call her."

"Okay, bye baby."

"Bye John."

"Hello."

"Stace, hey it's me."

"I was going to call you in a little bit. How'd you get home last night?"

"John brought me home, but we went by the beach first."

"Really? Just the two of you?"

"Yeah, we saw a shooting star and I made him make a wish."

"Oh my God, that's just too sweet. So did he say what he wished for?"

"That I would let him kiss me."

"Oh my God, did you kiss him?"

"I was drunk and he was just so damn cute. Yes, I let him kiss me. Don't you dare tell anybody!"

"You know I won't. So how was it?" He looks like he would be good at that and other things. Stacey giggled.

"It was so good. It was the best kiss I ever had."

"Oh damn Ash, you sound like you've fallen for him! How the hell did you let that happen? Did you tell him everything."

"No of course not! It was just a kiss, it didn't come up. She giggled.

What about Dorothea?"

"He wants to breakup with her. His feelings have changed. She wants to settle down and have kids and he's not ready for that."

"I don't know if you can believe anything he says. He has a nasty reputation for a reason. He's always after one thing. And once he gets it, he's gone. He's so full of shit, his eyes should be brown!"

"I know you're right. I just hope he's telling me the truth."

"Well if he breaks up with Dot that's one thing, but I wouldn't trust him very much. You've been hurt too much already."

"What did you think about Dalton?" Stacey asked.

"He's sweet and cute."

"He wants me to come up to the Fast Lane tonight. Do you want to go with me, Ash?"

"Yeah, John said he'll be up there tonight too."

"Okay I'll pick you up around six thirty."

"I'll be ready."

John was sitting out on his porch glancing over at Ashley's when Richie drove up.

"Hey man, I had to drop my Mom off at the eye doctor. It's going to take a little while for her eyes to dilate, can I kill some time here?"

"Sure pull up a chair."

"Can you believe Robby's getting married, this weekend?"

"Nope, your cuz is really taking the plunge, he's such a sucker!" John laughed.

"Yep his carefree days will be over!" Richie chuckled. "You're still going, huh?"

"Yep, I got a new suit and everything."

"What about Dot?" Is she still coming with you?"

"Yeah, she's coming."

"My Mom bumped into Erica at the store and now she's bugging me to take her to the wedding, again."

"I hope you told her no."

"I did, I said Mom I ain't taking her nowhere!"

"Good, you should just ask somebody else."

"I couldn't get anybody with such short notice."

"Sure you could, chicks love weddings. It's all romantic and shit, they'll eat it up. Hell you might even get lucky, afterwards." He chuckled. "I'd find somebody, you ain't got nothing to lose."

"I think I'll just go stag."

John stood up. "I'm going to get a drink, you want something?"

"Yeah, anything is good."

John went in the house.

Richie was sitting there and saw Ashley go out to a car in her yard and open the trunk. He got up and walked over to her.

"Hello darlin."

"Hey Richie, what are you up to?"

"Nothing much. Whose fine ass Trans Am is this?"

"It's mine. It was in the garage."

"Damn, it looks just like the Smokey and the Bandit car! Is it a '79?"

"No it's a '78." My Grand Daddy bought it for my sweet sixteenth birthday."

"Well damn it's fine, you've got to let me drive it sometime!"

She grinned. "Maybe."

John came back out and looked around for Richie. He saw him over with Ashley. "I wonder what the hell he's up to?" He mumbled as he sat the drinks on the table and stared next door at them talking.

Do you have plans for this Saturday?"

"No not really, why?"

Richie was nervously fumbling with his hands. "My cousin is getting married in the city and I was supposed to go with Erica, but we aren't together. Would you like to go? It's a big church wedding with a big formal dinner and an open bar at the reception. If you're busy, it's okay I can just go stag."

"I have a dress I wore to my aunt's big fancy wedding, I think it would be okay. Where is in the city?"

"Oh I'm sorry, I forgot you're not from here. It's New York, it's about thirty miles from here."

"Okay, well I've never been there. Sure Richie I would love to go with you." She smiled.

John was watching and Ashley smiling at Richie was like a punch in the gut.

"Thanks Ashley, I was sort of dreading going by myself and now I'm going to have the hottest date there."

"Aww Richie, you're so sweet."

Richie was walking back with a big cheesy grin on his face.

"What's up with you?" John asked.

"Oh nothing just got me a date for the wedding. And I'm going to be with the hottest chick there."

John was stunned. "You invited Ashley?" He questioned with a harsh tone.

"Yeah man, is that a problem?"

"No, she won't know very many people there. I didn't think she would want to go."

"She said yes, so I guess she does."

"Who's car is that?"

"It's hers and I'm going to ask her if we can take it to the wedding. Can you imagine all my family's faces, when I get out of that bad ass car with that hot girl!" Richie was grinning from ear to ear.

John was getting pissed. "That should be me with the hottest chick at the wedding, showing up in that fine car." He thought.

John's face was cold and showing all the signs of being jealous, but Richie was so happy, he didn't even notice.

He downed his drink. "Thanks man, I guess I need to go check on Mom. And thanks for giving me the idea to ask somebody last minute, I wouldn't have thought of asking Ashley."

He got in his car and drove off. John sat there and mumbled, "Me and my big damn mouth."
